Megan Wean Sears
DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPHER

Megan Wean Sears serves as head of the theatre conservatory program as well as director/choreographer of Alter Castle Players and teaches all theatre classes, which are created to give students exposure to theatre at all levels, from design to advanced performance.  This is her tenth year at Alter and in that time, she has directed 24 productions, including Tony-award winners like Aida, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Disney’s Newsies.  During the 2020 lockdown, Sears was leading one of the only theatre programs anywhere still producing a full season of work with a mix of streaming, limited runs, and socially distanced experiences for students.  In addition, Sears has commissioned several original works and premieres providing students opportunities to originate new material.  Sears’ program also utilizes theatre as a way of addressing challenging social and historical cross-curriculum topics including the Holocaust, gun violence and the 9/11 attack.

Under her leadership, Castle Players has grown from one play and one musical per year to a complete theatrical season – one play, two musicals, and a community-wide talent show that highlights the creative talents of students of all ages.  Student participation levels have increased year over year, with Alter’s theatre program becoming a driving factor for many students choosing our campus.

Megan studied Musical Theatre at Wright State University.  Afterwards, she had a successful professional career both regionally and a Broadway tour before turning her sights toward education.  As both an educator and director, Megan works to build relationships with each student where they feel safe to express themselves and grow their creativity.  She also works one-on-one with students who wish to pursue collegiate degrees in the arts, helping them to find the right program, prepare auditions and continue their artistic journeys.
